As December arrives, the pace of the world seems to double. The to-do lists get longer, the expectations get higher, and the pressure to do it all can feel overwhelming. For the woman who is a doer, a healer, and a giver, this can be an exhausting time. You might feel like you don't have time to slow down.
But what if I told you that the most important thing you could do this season is to pause? Just as nature slows down in winter to rest and renew, so are we invited to do the same. This isn’t a sign of weakness or laziness. It is a sign of wisdom.
For me, this was a lesson my body had to teach me. I was always doing, always doing two things at once. Watching a movie? I was on my laptop. Eating a meal? I was checking emails. I resisted meditation, and even with breathwork, I'd stick to a quick five-minute practice instead of a longer one. My "peaceful" walks in nature were for catching up on phone calls. I’d often get sick or injure myself, as if my body and mind were demanding a break I wasn't willing to give.
The most profound lesson came during a trip to Thailand. After pushing myself through a rigorous schedule of volunteering and training programs, my body finally gave out. I was knocked down by the worst flu I’ve had in a very long time. For two days, I was burning with fever, and it took over a week just to walk short distances without becoming exhausted. My body was weak, and it forced me to slow down, and at times to do nothing. As I slowly recovered, the realization dawned on me: slowing down was exactly what my body and soul had been begging for.
You don't have to wait for your body to force you to stop. You can create a "micro-sanctuary" for yourself right now. When you feel a moment of stress or overwhelm, simply pause what you're doing. Place a hand on your heart and a hand on your stomach. Take a slow, deep breath in and out. This simple act of connecting with your body can ground you and bring a sense of immediate peace, reminding you that you are a priority in your own life.
Your journey is worthy of peace. This month, I'll go deeper into this sacred act of slowing down. Join me in The Winter Sanctuary: Reflection for Peace and Renewal, a sacred online space to reflect on your journey without judgment, release what's heavy, and find true peace. Through gentle breathwork and a long, restorative meditation, you'll learn to create a calm that you can carry with you. This gentle pause and compassionate reflection will prepare you to step into the new year feeling refreshed and ready to bloom boldly.
